Colour of the Year 2016

One of my favourite aspects of design is the inspiration and information gathering stage. Coming from a research background in my job, I love meta-analysis. The mass gathering of information, collecting it all together, organizing and studying it for commonalities. What’s similar? What’s different? Outliers? What speaks to me?

Excitingly, I am sharing my own predictions here on the blog for what I think might be the Benjamin Moore Colour of the Year 2016. True to myself, I opted to move towards colour trends that suit my personality and draw my attention. I tried to steer clear of fads and really stick with classic colours that can be found in our natural environment…Bringing the outdoors in. Seems to be a theme around here. You can find my full visual inspiration on my Pinterest Board here. Here is a sneak peek into some of the images that inspired my choice.

This blog post really brings together the visual inspiration, thoughts behind it and why I believe I have picked a winner for 2016. I went with bold. Now, this isn’t necessarily in line with previous Benjamin Moore Colours of the year, including: Guildford Green, Breath of Fresh Air or Lemon Sorbet. But you know what? I am sticking to my guns to say that 2016 will be bold. Complemented with soft, nature  inspired colours in the colour palette (or Colour Trends) for 2016.

I also know that picking a blue was risky. In the past 5 years, 2 shades of blue have already been selected as the colour of the year. I am confident in my choice as I look to my sources of inspiration: European flower markets, up and coming fashion designers and northern landscapes all over the world. Nature was my leading force and I think it steered me in the right direction.

I present to you, my Benjamin Moore Colour of the Year 2016: Lead Gray (2131-30).

Personally, a computer doesn’t do this colour justice. I know the word ‘gray’ is used but it is so much more deep blue than a gray to me. I am no colour expert, but I do know that when you see this colour in person… Completely different.
